Have you ever tried making videos on iMovie or your mobile device?
If you have, then you will know how poor the audio quality is. While it might be suitable for making Instagram videos for friends, relying on a phone or desktop microphone is not an appropriate option for crafting engaging video content.
The most important aspect of your video content is the audio quality. Capturing dynamic audio takes time, some technological savvy, a production studio, and a knack for editing. Professional video production companies have all the tools necessary to create rich soundscapes and crisp voice recording for your videos. But if you do not have that kind of budget, you can still capture great audio on a budget.
For those looking to make the most out of their video content, here is a little guide detailing what you need to capture professional sounding audio for your videos.
A high-quality microphone.
A great microphone will make all the difference in representing the nuances of your voice. Before making a purchase, be sure to consider the context in which you plan on using the microphone. For example, if you are looking to record audio from a script inside a studio, then you should invest in a condenser microphone. Videos with any physical movement, on the other hand, will require a Lavalier mic – one that clips on to your shirt and is just perfect for YouTube.
Also, no matter what kind of microphone you purchase, it will always pick-up plenty of background noise. Industry-standard practice is to run the audio file through a noise removal filter to pull out static frequencies that distract the ear from the voice.
Find the right room.
It is vital that you find a quiet room to record in that does not pick up on external sounds. Try to consider all the different sound movements that you might not notice: like the footsteps of someone outside the room, a distant cough from down the hall, or traffic from the street. All of this constitutes excess noise – and while a lot of it can be removed in post-production, it is worth taking some time to find the quietest room before recording.
Don’t forget to use a pop filter to catch all your mouth sounds.
Make sure it is mono compatible.
If your video is going to be viewed on mobile, then you need to optimise the music for the specifications of the platform. Mixing audio through speakers on a desktop computer is usually done in ‘stereo’, which means that you hear sound coming out of two speakers. Mobile phones are only compatible with ‘mono’ sound, meaning there is only one speaker for audio. To get audio playing on a mobile device, you need to do two things.
• Adjust the setting of your audio to make it “in phase.”
• Make sure the audio quality of each sound snippet used in the video is high-res. The sample rate has to be high, and the ideal format is either WAV or FLAC. Yup, MP3’s are a thing of the past!
If you do not make these changes, then audio that plays on a computer will not play on a mobile device.
People watch videos to be engaged and by your brand, and a thin sounding voice or a dysfunctional audio track is going to fall flat every single time. Whether the content is appearing as a YouTube tutorial or an Instagram commercial, the same principle applies. Get the audio sounding crisp and clear, and people will take notice.
